Students will register in the Environmental Engineering program in the department and university in which their supervisor is a member. Co-supervision of students is encouraged, in which case the student will register in the department of the primary supervisor. The program of studies will be subject to the General Regulations of the Schools of Graduate Studies at each university. Program specific regulations are presented in this section.
All degrees may be completed by either full-time or part-time study in accordance with the regulations of the respective university. To facilitate part-time study evening courses will be offered whenever possible.
The normal requirement for admission to the Master's Program in Environmental Engineering is a four-year bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, other related engineering disciplines (Civil, Chemical, Mechanical, etc.), or Environmental Science disciplines.
All students entering the program will be required to have courses in mathematics, probability, and statistics equivalent to courses required in the undergraduate Engineering programs. Students admitted to the program without full equivalency in these areas will be expected to take appropriate undergraduate courses early in their studies. These courses will be additional to the normal degree requirements.
All students entering the program will also be required to have taken undergraduate courses equivalent to the following courses:
| Carleton University | University of Ottawa | |
|---|---|---|
| Civil and Environmental Engineering | Chemical Engineering | Civil Engineering |
| MAAE2300 Introd. Fluid Mechanics | CHG 3312 Fluid Flow | CVG 2111 Fluid Mechanics |
| ENVE3001 Env. Eng. Unit Operations | CVG 2131 Introduction to Environmental Engineering | CVG 2131 Introduction to Environmental Engineering |
| ENVE3002 Env. Eng. Systems Modeling | CHG 4375 Wastewater Treatment by Physical and Chemical Processes | CVG 3132 Quality and Treatment of Water |
These courses are considered to provide the minimum background in fluid mechanics, and physical, chemical, and biochemical treatment principles necessary to adequately follow environmental engineering courses at the graduate level. Depending on their background, students may have been exposed to these principles through a different combination of courses in their undergraduate curriculum.
Study at the masterÕs level can be pursued through a thesis to a M.A.Sc., a project option leading to a M.Eng., or a coursework option leading to a M.Eng. The requirements for coursework are specified in terms of credits. At Carleton University, 1.0 credit typically comprises three hours of lectures or seminars a week for two terms, or the equivalent. At the University of Ottawa, 1.0 course credit is one hour of instruction per week for one term. Thus 1.0 credit in Carleton University is equivalent to 6 course credits in the University of Ottawa notation.

In keeping with the objective of ensuring a breadth of knowledge for graduates of the program, students in the masterÕs program are expected to take at least one graduate course from each of at least three of the following areas of study:
This requirement serves the objectives of educating graduate professionals who are not only specialized in one area but who are sufficiently familiar with problems and different approaches in the other areas to enable them to interact readily at a technical level with colleagues working in those areas. In addition to the courses associated with the individual areas, students will be encouraged to select courses from fundamental areas such as chemistry, numerical modeling, and applied statistics.
MasterÕs or Ph.D. candidates transferring from another university must take at least half their courses at the Institute.
The normal requirement for admission into the Ph.D. Program in Environmental Engineering is completion of either:
Students wishing to enter the program who do not have either of these backgrounds will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Additional course requirements may be specified in some cases.
The requirements for the Ph.D. program (from a Master's degree) are as follows:
MasterÕs students with outstanding performance in the masterÕs courses may request transfer into the Ph.D. program without completing the masterÕs degree. Students who are permitted to do so require 4.5 course credits CU or 27 credits OU for a Ph.D., including any credits transferred from the MasterÕs degree program.
Candidates in the Ph.D. program will be expected to demonstrate a broad knowledge of the areas within environmental engineering (see "Breadth Requirement" under "Master's Program" above) through course work completed to date (undergraduate and graduate).
Credits and "Course" credits: Most graduate courses meeting 3 hours per week for one term (September–December or January–April) carry a rating of 3 "credits".
